Imagine a jump (John Lennon vs. Van Halen)
Je zou bijna denken dat het oorspronkelijk zo bedoeld is, deze mashup van Imagine en Jump. Verantwoordelijk hiervoor is de Fransman Michael Yung, beter bekend als Mighty Mike. Zijn Youtubekanaal vind je hier en hij blogt ook.
Norwegian Recycling – Mash It Up
Youtube attendeerde mij op een relatief nieuwe bijdrage van mashupkoning Norwegian Recycling. Op een druilerige zaterdag als deze een uitstekend vermaak. Hieronder een mp3 van het nummer:
Stamppot van Lady Gaga, Beyoncé en Metallica
Het is een mooi en uitvoerig overzicht wat gegeven wordt in Top Mashups of 2010. Ik heb nog lang niet alles beluisterd want het overzicht betreft 153 nummers, maar een track die gelijk m’n aandacht trok was Enter Telephone (Lady Gaga feat. Beyone “Telephone” vs. Metallica “Enter Sandman”) van DJ’s from Mars. Luister er hier naar:
Verder natuurlijk materiaal van ususal suspects als Pogo en Norwegian Recycling. Complimenten aan de samenstellers en ook nog eens volledig gratis te downloaden. Zo hoort het.
Pogo remixt Johannesburg
Ik kan er niets aan doen, maar plaats alweer een Pogo-post. Bovenstaande video Joburg Jam is namelijk in de eerste plaats een fantastische remix van in Johannsburg geschoten materiaal, maar daarnaast voorbeeld van het Kickstarter-project Pogo Presents World Remix:
World-renowned sound remixer Nick “Pogo” Bertke is working on a new project — and he needs your help.
For “World Remix,” Pogo plans to travel the world Matt Harding-style, collecting sight and sounds as he goes, with the ultimate goal being “to compose and shoot a track and video for each major culture of the world.” The project will be funded entirely through pledges submitted via Kickstarter, and released worldwide on CD, DVD, and made available for download on PogoMix.net.
“I am deeply inspired by the films Baraka and Koyaanisqatsi,” Pogo says, “and hope to produce the best cinematography and music I humanely can throughout each project.”
The initial track, “Joburg Jam” — a remix of footage captured around the city of Johannesburg, South Africa — was released today.”

Pogo doet ’t ook in het echt
Nick Bertke (Pogo) is hier al een aantal keer voorbijgekomen, maar dat is omdat ik zijn mash-ups gewoonweg ontzettend waardeer. Wat ik niet wist is dat hij zijn intrigerende samplekunstwerkjes ook live etaleert. Over zijn instrumentarium zegt hij:
It all fits into one bag! I just can’t tell you how important it is to simplify a mission-critical system like this. Every component is a potential bomb just waiting to go off and destroy everyone’s night. The less components the better, and the easier it is to get in and out of the venue. I remember lugging my entire studio machine to an event once – naturally everything failed, and I almost threw my back out trying to get everything back in the car. It was a good thing nobody knew I’d be on that night.”
Helaas heb ik geen liveopnames van Bertke in m’n bezit, dus daarom onderstaand maar weer een stukje ouderwetse Pogohuisvlijt, getiteld Upular. Is ook leuk!
Video for my track ‘Upular’, composed using chords, bass notes and vocal samples from the Disney Pixar film ‘Up’. The track also features a small number of percussion samples, including an obvious kick drum, crash cymbals and hi-hats. ‘Upular’ is my first ever remix of a Pixar film.”
Gemashupte open source muziekinstrumenten
In het artikel Zoybar: Open-Source Music Hardware Architecture wordt aandacht besteed aan een open ontwikkelgemeenschap Zoybar. Deze groep richt zich volledig op de hardwarekant van muziekinstrumenten. Met behulp van een modulaire hardwarekit kunnen verschillende instrumenten gemashupt worden en vanzelfsprekend kunnen eigen inventies worden verwerkt. Geheel in de open source-traditie wordt dit gedocumenteerd aan de gemeenschap ‘teruggegeven’.
Zoybar is an open R&D Lab for academic, hobbyist, and commercial developers to easily create music instruments and applications. Zoybar`s unique open R&D model provides access to both hardware and production files for further customizations and development by the end users themselves. Zoybar is a new form of expression of knowledge and information.

Everything Is A Remix kwam hier overigens al eerder voorbij, maar nogmaals embedden kan helemaal geen kwaad. Geweldig project namelijk, deze reeks documentaires waarvan het eerste deel hieronder. De overige drie delen staan nog op de rol.

Christian Marclay – Record Player (2000)
De onbetwiste koning van de analoge mashup is, naast John Oswald, toch wel Christian Marclay. De resultaten van zijn vinylexperimenten zijn zowel auditief als tastbaar, speels als rauw. Onderstaande documentaire Record Player (zowel in letterlijke als figuurlijke zin) geeft een mooie inkijk in zijn manier van werken.
Marclay’s work explores connections between sound, noise, photography, video, and film. A pioneer of using gramaphone records and turntables as musical instruments to create sound collage, Marclay is, in the words of critic Thom Jurek, perhaps the “unwitting inventor of turntablism.” His own use of turntables and records, beginning in the mid-1970s, was developed independently of but roughly parallel to hip hop’s use of the instrument.”

Pogo doet het nu met een kleine prinses
Pogo (Nick Bertke) maakte in dit geval gebruik van beeld en geluid van de film A Little Princess en ik neem wederom m’n pet af voor zoveel creatieve monnikenarbeid.
Whisperlude is my remix of A Little Princess, comprising harp sections, sound effects and vocal syllables recorded from the film. There are well over 100 different sounds in total, and it was quite a challenge when sequencing and mastering to keep it all sounding neat and coherent.
In editing the video for Whisperlude, I wanted to bring into fruition emotional experiences I’ve had over the past year by juxtaposing shots of sadness and happiness. The result is a video that isn’t as cheerful as most of my works, but one that I’m able to connect to on an emotional level very well.
Whisperlude marks the first of my videos to feature any kind of visual effects, and don’t be surprised if it’s the last. While the fruits of my labour are satisfying, it’s difficult for me to justify them delaying the release of a track this much. The rotoscoping and tracking involved had me go without sleep for several days, as if levelling each shot isn’t tedious enough with each video I produce. Nevertheless, I’m very happy with the results, and I don’t think such a rapid succession of shots could have worked any other way.
As always, picking a name took some time. I eventually narrowed my choices down to Whisperlude and Saratone (Sara being the main character of the film). I just happened to be speaking with YouTube wunderkind HomeStarRunnerTron before posting the video, who was kind enough to ask his family for a second opinion. With their help, I uploaded this track immediately with a title I think suits it well! My heart goes out to Skye and his family for always being such beautiful people.
