Jobs verdedigt Apple’s lock-in

Apple-baas Steve Jobs heeft (waarbij er voor het gemak maar wordt uitgegaan dat het daadwerkelijk Jobs of een naaste collega was) gereageerd op het gesloten karakter van iPhone. Jobs verwijst naar argumenten op de website Daring Fireball om aan te geven dat niet iedereen het oneens is met het huidige Apple-beleid. Wat het echter des te meer duidelijk maakt is dat er slechts één partij in het bijzonder baat bij heeft. Apple zelf.

So from Apple’s perspective, changing the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement to prohibit the use of things like Flash CS5 and MonoTouch to create iPhone apps makes complete sense. I’m not saying you have to like this. I’m not arguing that it’s anything other than ruthless competitiveness. I’m not arguing (up to this point) that it benefits anyone other than Apple itself. I’m just arguing that it makes sense from Apple’s perspective — and it was Apple’s decision to make.

Het lijkt er hiermee op dat er op korte termijn geen verandering in de lock-in gaat komen. Spijtig. Of zoals Jaron Lanier het in You Are Not A Gadget verwoordt:

So while lock-in may be a gangster in the world of railroads, it is an absolute tyrant in the digital world
